Day of the Dead (2008)

Day of the Dead is a horror film which is nominally a quasi-remake of George A. Romero’s classic zombie film of the same name, which was the third in Romero’s Dead series. The film is directed by Steve Miner (who also directed Friday the 13th Part 2, Friday the 13th Part 3 and Halloween H20: 20 Years Later) and written by Jeffrey Reddick. It was originally set for theatrical distribution, but was instead released directly to video.

The film was principally shot in Bulgaria, with limited shooting in Los Angeles, California. Tyler Bates provided the soundtrack, and screenwriter Jeffrey Reddick has a cameo appearance as an ill-fated police officer.

Comparisons to the original

This film actually bears little resemblance to the original Day of the Dead from 1985. Similarities include the names of several characters, including Dr. Logan, Salazar, Cpt. Rhodes, and Sarah. None of these characters bears any similarity to those of Romero’s original characters other than their names. One character, Bud Crain, is potentially meant to identify with Bub, the trained zombie in Romero’s film. In this new version, Bud is a soldier who becomes a zombie who remains with survivors and aids them in surviving, including a scene where he shoots a gun at one of the main antagonists, just as the zombie Bub does at the conclusion of Romero’s Day.

Another similarity can be found in the new film’s conclusion as the survivors retreat into an underground bunker and missile silo, which is the setting for the original film. The contents of the underground bunker are, however, entirely different from the original.

The film does not follow Romero’s guidelines of what a zombie is at all; instead of a mysterious and unknown force bringing people back from the dead, the ‘zombies’ of this film are humans infected with a virus that makes them attack uninfected humans. When the infection takes control, the individual freezes completely, as the virus fully overwhelms their body. Once changed, the infected inexplicably gain numerous open sores on their faces. Once they are infected, the zombies gain super-human abilities, such as climbing walls, running along the ceiling, and jumping very high. This is very different than Romero’s “slow-moving” zombies and Zack Snyder’s 2004 Dawn of the Dead’s “fast” zombies which can run but at a normal speed for humans. For some reason, contact with fire causes the zombies to disintegrate instantly.

The original Day of the Dead picked up well after the first zombie outbreak; a group of scientists and army personnel believe they might be the only living people left as they have not made contact with any other survivors in weeks. This film begins as the outbreak begins, making it more similar to Night of the Living Dead.

Love this movie, saw it a couple of months ago.
The odd thing, though, is that the zombies in this movie are actually quite smart. They understood human language and such. That freaked me out a bit, since never saw that in other movies :D

But over-all, a good film. Recommend it. :)

  2. Aaron says:

I honestly don’t know about this, but it is a zombie film so I will watch of course. It is hard to give an opinion prior to the film, but the recent divergence from the Romero paradigm sometimes leaves a sour taste in my mouth. But who knows, the revitalization of the genre may turn out to be a good thing.

And as for the understanding of human language, rewatch the original Day of the Dead, Bub (who is about as lovable a zombie as you can find anywhere) understands the speach of the living just fine!

I will wair and be hopeful.

  3. elfwarrior says:

yea normally zombies in movies are no quit smart at all but som movies have them smart

  4. Paul says:

I thought this was better then the first one. It was odd that the one zombie didn’t eat his friends.
Don’t get me wrong nothing and I mean nothing can beat a Romero movie. It was good tho. I’m hoping there will be a new zombie movie coming out this year. If anybody knows of any coming out please feel free to email me and let me know.

Im on the hunt for this movie, Im gonna get em’ all. I got night of the living dead, Return of the living dead, Chud, Dawn of the dead, Land of the dead, 28 days later, and 28 weeks later all the resident evil series. I do have to agree with oogie on romero vids, Dawn of the dead was so classic! Just the idea in the mall is great.

It was soo funny wen he kept teasing bud when he had turned into a zombie LMAO! but overall the whole thing was good! i pick dis movie ova dawn of the dead anyday!

  7. zombie phil says:

Not a bad one at all.
bud the vegetarian zombie is hilarious.
and I love that they don’t give us the old romero cliché zombie once again.

  8. Pilot says:

Though the so called “old Romero cliché” sometimes ain’t so bad, is it? ;)

It may be getting “old” when almost all zombie movies are the same, though it’s the true essence, in my opinion. ;)

    BETTER THEN THE FIRST ONE?????????

this the worst zombie movie i’ve ever seen

i don’t typically worry about zombie movement and such, but climbing on the ceilings? really,so zombies are spiders now…..

    horrible, o/10

but to be honest,i shut the movie off after the intial zombie attack,so it MIGHT have gotten better, but i seriously doubt it.

  11. Pilot says:

It is worth it. At first I was confused too, but after watching the whole movie, I came to a conclusion that it ain’t that bad. ;)

  12. Angie says:

i loved the movie. the way they jump is scary, hate if that was real XD
but im sooo upset nick cannon died in the end</3

  13. deadmandancin says:

Really good zombie movie, at a guess I would say it has the same sort of budget as a good made for tv movie and they have used every bit of that wisely. Good special effects good plot occasionally it can be a bit samey but it is definately worth it. I think that Dead Set was better.

  14. A dude says:

Black guy: OMFG OMFG OMFG, WE GONNA DIE YO!!! WE GONNA DIE MOTHA *****!!! WE GONNA-
*zombie charges him and throws him out the window*.

    My point.

  15. grant says:

does anyone else think its weird that ving rhames is in this remake too?…what a ridiculous movie…

  16. joe says:

i dont think zombies should be just like the 2004 dawn of the dead zombies

  17. hugejeans says:

To say this is a remake of the day of the dead is an insult to all things zombie!

    Worst zombie movie ever!

  18. No says:

    sucked….
you can see that the blood isint real…
and the zombies in the ceilings?….what?!
    so disappointed

  19. Naes says:

This movie was complete garbage, and a disgrace to the original Day of the Dead.

  20. Aaron2 says:

This is probably George’s worst work. Zombies are not meant to be fast and smart. Whatever happend to the dumb, flesh-eating, slow zombie that follows others in packs? Not a good one for you George, please come back to making the classics, like Night of the Livind Dead. Ooh, and better actors too, I love Mena Suvari, but Nick Cannon, definitely not meant to be in zombie movies.

  21. Pilot says:

I think having smart zombies for once wasn’t so bad.
And zombies being fast – definitely not a flaw. I usually even consider it as a plus on the film.

  22. JM says:

Ridiculous movie for ridiculous guys with bad taste made by ridiculous guys with no talent at all

  23. PiKo says:

This isnt a movie of George Romero´s , its a remake idiot.

  24. Davin says:

Did you see the trailer for the brand New film ZOMBIE ATTACK from Outer Space. The film features actress Ashley Delehay and several other newcomers. I think it looks pretty cool.

  25. Greg says:

I just met the new actress Ashley Delehay at the Comic Expo in Calgary this past weekend! She was so nice and very beautiful! Her photo card that she signed for me is now on my wall!! Thanks Ashley!! Good Luck with your new Zombie movie!! Kick some ass!

  26. pedro says:

    this movie its awesome

  27. Ava Green says:

    my favorite character on the Plants Vs. Zombies game is none other than the Michael Jackson zombie.:;;

  28. Melissa says:

This is a horrible movie. Right from the start, it tricks you into watching it thanks to casting Ving Rhames. I thought for sure this was a sequel to the “Dawn of the Dead” remake (which I loved) since it also starred Ving Rhames. I think the ONLY reason he agreed to be in this movie was so he could be made into a zombie.

I admit, I love zombie movies — for the most part. This one was simply horrific, in every way. The acting was horrible, the plot was nonexistant, the zombies were extremely unrealistic (I’m sorry — but in some movies, the zombies act how they are meant to act…this movie, no…smart zombies??? Seriously?)…just a sad unnecessary movie. I might have enjoyed it if it remotely resembled the original “Day of the Dead” but it was far from the original. I recommend people avoid this stinker…at all costs. There are much more superior zombie movies out there.

  29. Disur says:

i dont get the vegetarian one…zombies aren’t vampires, they dont think…personally i like romero’s cliche but the fast zombies work fine with me. but i seriously dont get the vegetarian one…

  30. Paul says:

This movie was GARBAGE!!! Acting was TERRIBLE!!! The only thing that could have saved it a little was to have Mena Suvari run around in a thong, then it could have been labled a comedy, which is what it was to begin with.

  31. Mike says:

The only good thing about this movie was the poster. There is a reason why it went straight to video.

  32. ShufflingDeadBloke says:

Complete Arse…Just because a movie has zombies in it doesn’t make it good. At least the first two Dead remakes were reasonable efforts, avoid this like the plague in the plot.

  33. Phillip says:

Lets not kid our selves here.. this movie was CRAP! It was terrible and an insult to the zombie genre and a further insult to George Romero. Anyone who actually thinks this movie is good in anyway DO NOT TRUST THEIR TASTE IN MOVIES! .. This movie has a freakin’ zombie HELPING humans for crying out loud! Why? OH because he was a vegetarian when he was living so as a zombie he doesn’t eat flesh… omfg people. Another thing… the zombies gaining super human powers? When has any good zombie movie ever had zombies with powers? Never, any that have tried are laughed at *memory serves of a severed flying zombie head, flying because the zombie head was flapping his ears* .. it’s just dumb just like this movie is. The only thing good out of this movie is that *spoiler* Nick Cannon gets eaten
